Patio

As soon as summer hits and the cold weather disappears, it’s time to step outside and enjoy the sunshine! Most of us agree that home is the best place to relax and unwind, especially if you have a patio or another outdoor living space to spend time in.

When was the last time you spent time on your patio? If you’re not one to lounge around outside in the cold, then it’s probably been a few months and chances are your patio could use some updating.

Don’t worry! There are a few easy things you can do to transform your patio into an extension of your home where your family and friends will want to spend the entire summer. Here’s our first-timer’s guide to updating your patio space.

1. Add Lighting

The right lighting can really make or break any space, including your backyard patio. Whether you want to use that space for entertaining and throwing parties or you simply want a relaxing area to spend your leisurely evenings, then it’s important that you make sure you have good lighting.

Not only will it create much better visibility for you and your guests, but it can also enhance your space and provide a cozy, enjoyable atmosphere. A simple solution is to purchase string lights for a relatively low price and string them around your space.

However, if you’re looking for something a little more permanent, there are a ton of options available to you. From adding porch lights and subtle landscape lights to your home to installing recessed lighting, wall sconces, pendant lights and more, there is an endless number of ways you can use outdoor lighting to update your patio.

2. Update Furniture

An easy way to update any space whether it’s indoor or out is to update the furniture—in this case, the patio furniture.

You can go to any home improvement store and spend the money on a brand new outdoor furniture set or you can simply refurbish your existing furniture.

We suggest doing the latter. After all, if your patio furniture still functions properly, isn’t damaged and the only thing wrong with it is that it’s a little bit out of date, then all you need to do is simply give it a new look.

If you have metal furniture, try adding a new coat of paint to it. You can find outdoor metal spray paint in a variety of colors and for a relatively low price at most home improvement stores.

Maybe painting isn’t your thing or you actually like the rustic look of old metal, and that’s okay. You can still update your patio furniture by replacing the cushions or adding new pillows (just make sure they’re made out of fabric that is suitable for the outdoors).

3. Decorate with Plants

You can easily transform any patio or outdoor living area into a vibrant and beautiful space by simply adding a few potted plants here or there—and who doesn’t love plants?

When selecting plants to decorate your space, opt for larger plants, such as shrubs, standards or even perennials that will look great all year long.

If mosquitos, gnats and other insects are a concern, try adding plants to your patio that are natural bug repellers, such as lavender, mint, and basil. Be sure to consider the amount of light available in your patio so you can place your plants where they will thrive best.

4. Stain Your Concrete

When it comes to updating your backyard patio, you’re not limited to just giving your furniture and decor a facelift—you can revitalize the concrete floor of your patio, too.

Most homeowners settle for the standard gray concrete because they don’t want to spend the money on something more custom.

However, adding a stain or pattern to your concrete is an easy and relatively inexpensive project that you can do yourself. This type of project usually only takes a couple of days and, after that, your patio will look like an entirely new space.

5. Install a Pergola

Adding a pergola to your outdoor living area is a great way to distinguish your patio as its own space separate from the rest of your backyard.

Not only do pergolas offer the perfect modern touch to any backyard space, but they also provide enhanced privacy and shade from the sun.

If you’re planning on using your patio to entertain guests and host parties, then a pergola is the perfect addition for you. An additional benefit of having a pergola installed at your home is that it will make your home more valuable when you plan to sell it.

Don’t have the budget for a pergola but still want to keep your patio covered? Consider purchasing a patio umbrella or look for outdoor furniture sets that include one.

6. Add a Small Outdoor Kitchen or Bar

You can turn your patio into the ultimate dining and entertainment space by having a small outdoor kitchen or custom bar built into it.

Not only will your home become the most popular place for your family and friends to spend their time, but cooking and hosting for your guests will be so much easier if you don’t have to keep running inside and out.

If you don’t have space or the budget for an outdoor kitchen, consider creating your own beverage station by repurposing an old bar cart or unused dresser.

7. Add a Rug

If your budget doesn’t allow you to invest in much more than furniture updates and some new decor, then you can still dress up your patio by adding a new area rug.

Area rugs are actually one of the most important features of any outdoor space and often become the focal point of your decor. In fact, there are many cases in which interior designs actually start with the area rug and decorate around it.

You can find rugs at most home decor and home improvement stores—just make sure to select an area rug that is designed for outdoor use and is the correct size for your space.

There are so many different things you can do to update your patio space, and these are just a few! Whether you have the budget for a new outdoor kitchen or want to start simply by adding new lights and furniture, you’ll love the new look of your patio.
